City Crusader

Interesting in Acre
Acre - Town Crusader (Crusader City)

Opposite the mosque, Ahmed al-Jazar the entrance to the Town Crusader (Crusader City), a massive complex, which occupied the Knights of St. John. To date, most of the city is underground. He was buried under a huge earthen mound, which Ahmad al-Jazar built his citadel. Most of the complex was unearthed in the interval between 1955 and 1964. In the northern part were found seven mansions allegedly owned by the seven national groups of which had prepared the Order of St John. One of their mansions now used as a room for concerts. All the palaces are vast halls (previously probably used as dormitories), they were only partially excavated in order not to endanger the balance of a citadel built above them. Part of the complex was completely liberated from the ground and, according to scientists, was a dining hall, although it is sometimes mistakenly called a crypt because to dig into the room included, ducking through the window, is located on street level. Refectory - a huge rectangular hall with a cruciform vaulted ceilings, resting on three massive round pilasters. Testimony about the time of its creation are lilies carved on the two consoles that are connected with the arrival in town of Louis VII of the French in 1148. From the dining room you can go down into the lighted underground gallery, the length of which originally consisted of 350 m. Construction of the gallery refers to the Persian period, later it was used by the Crusaders as a secret passage to the harbor. Now gallery extends only 65 m to Bost, a building that the Crusaders used as a refuge and a shelter for pilgrims.
